Salute To The Jet Age

On January 25, 1959 American Airlines Flight# 2 inaugurated jet service from Los Angeles International Airport with a star-studded and VIP-filled transcontinental flight to New York's Idlewild Airport. 2009 marks 50 years since that first flight and the Flight Path Learning Center Museum chose to salute this event, as well as celebrate the Jet Age that's followed, during its annual fund raising gala in October of this year.

As part of that evenings program, the museum explored the media archives of the airport and produced a short 12 minute video saluting the Jet Age. With their permission, I was able to upload a portion of that video to this blog. The full version can be seen at the museum, as well as additional information learned about the airport, the airlines and the aircraft depicted in the tribute video.

American still operates Flight# 2 between Los Angeles and New York City. Long since gone are the smokey 707's that operated the route, but you can still catch a ride to New York's Idlewild (Er.. John F. Kennedy) Airport on a 3-class Boeing 767-200 jet.

Below, a salute to the Jet Age!

I'm a recent plane spotter living in LA and by far, your blog is the best website to figure out the prime locations to watch planes. Thank you again.
